Ingenious machines for blood separation or transfusion

Fresenius Kabi is the global leading organisation in relation to transfusion technology. In Emmer-Compascuum, we are responsible for the production of single use components for ingenious machines that are used to perform autotransfusions and apheresis therapies. We therefore ensure safety and quality in critical situations.

What is autotransfusion?

Autotransfusion means that a patient’s blood is returned to that patient during or after an operation. The full description is: ‘autologous blood transfusion’, which is a situation in which the donor and recipient are the same person (this is what autologous means). The return of the patient’s own blood reduces the probability of infection by pathogens that can be transferred by blood and ensures a faster recovery.

Maximum patient safety

In relation to autotransfusion, the C.A.T.S. (Continuous Autotransfusion System) is key. This is placed next to the operating table of the patient. This wheeled system is developed and produced by Fresenius Kabi. We produce disposables in Emmer-Compascuum for transfusion bags, reservoirs in the interest of preseparation, centrifugal (cleaning) chambers and full autotransfusion systems. For maximum patient safety, all components that we produce may only be used once.


How it works…

The C.A.T.S. assembly is very ingenious, but autotransfusion is simple as a process. This is what happens when one of our autotransfusion systems is installed.

  • The blood that the patient loses during an operation is suctioned by one of our lines;
  • The line is connected to a reservoir and a bag with an anticoagulant;
  • The reservoir is vacuum suctioned using a pump and therefore the line is given suction power;
  • Any tissue particles are filtered away in the reservoir;
  • The blood is transferred to the centrifugal (cleaning) chamber;
  • Through cleaning, the red blood cells are separated from the other blood components (white blood cells, platelets and plasma) and fat particles are removed;

  • The other blood components are collected in the waste bag.

Obviously, patient safety during any autotransfusion must be guaranteed. We therefore produce our disposables with the utmost care and in accordance with extremely high, international quality and safety standards.

What is apheresis?

Apheresis literally means: taking away. It is a medical extracorporeal therapy where ‘unhealthy’ particles are removed from the blood of a patient or donor by using refined separation technology. The remaining blood is returned.

Fresenius Com.Tec® blood cell separator

The Fresenius Com.Tec®, a sophisticated, in-house developed and globally used blood cell separator, forms the foundation of apheresis therapy. Fresenius Kabi Emmen also produces the required disposables for this separator.

Apheresis therapies

There are various apheresis therapies that contribute towards the quality of life of many chronically ill patients to an important degree and that can, in some situations, save lives. A frequent application is isolating blood plasma. An alternative fluid then replaces the liquid component of blood. Apheresis is also often deployed for the removal of fat particles (lipoprotein) in patients who suffer from hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol). This is a hereditary metabolic disorder that leads to an irresponsible high cholesterol level. There are also apheresis therapies deployed in relation to leukaemia, cardiovascular diseases and various autoimmune diseases.

Apheresis in blood transfusions

Apheresis also often plays a key role in blood transfusions. In this case, the blood of the donor is separated based on components that are relevant for the patient. The rest of the blood is returned to the donor. As a process, apheresis can be compared to the autotransfusion process. In both cases, the single use mini centrifuge produced by Fresenius Kabi Emmen is key. Again it applies within this context that patient safety and quality have the highest priority. Our products are continuously and very strictly checked for this.
